Abundant at flea market and tag sales, crocheted potholders are inexpensive but priceless little gems. I am eager to purchase them, knowing that vintage potholders never cease to generate new ideas for projects. Whenever I see them for sale, it always amazes me that the fruits of somebody’s hard work and creative spirit can be bought for just pennies. I like to take inspiration from that creative spirit, and pick up where the creator left off . You never know what kinds of unexpected uses you’ll come up with! Here, I sew two together, creating a cute pouch for a hand-decorated journal.

                         MATERIALS AND TOOLS

Two matching crocheted potholders    small composition book    decorative paper   grosgrain ribbon (for bow)   thread   needle   scissors   hot glue gun   basting glue   decorative metal letter   pencil   sewing machine

1.  Stitch potholders together
Machine stitch two identical potholders together, joining three sides to form a pocket.

2.  Add bow
Tie the grosgrain ribbon into a small decorative bow. Hot glue the bow onto the front top of the pocket.

3.  Add more embellishments
Sew additional embellishments onto the front as desired, such as a decorative letter, as shown here.

4.  Prepare paper for journal cover
Lay a sheet of decorative paper facedown on your work surface. Place the small composition book on the paper, then trace around the perimeter of the front and back covers.

5.  Adhere paper to covers
Cut the paper, following along the traced lines. Trim the paper to fi t on the front and back covers of the book, then use basting glue to adhere the paper to the covers.

6.  Add decorative stitching to journal
Using a sewing machine, add a decorative straight or zig-zag stitch to the book’s front and back covers.

7.  Place journal in pocket
Once the journal is fi nished, place it in the crocheted purse pocket.
