Making Cute Cutouts

Agreeting card is a fantastic way to send a message to someone you care about. No matter the occasion — thanks, congratulations, birthdays, and anniversaries people enjoy receiving cards, and a handmade card with an added paper-engineering dimension is special because it lets the recipient know how much he or she means to you.
1. Copy the template in figure onto the pink card, score along the dotted line with a pair of scissors, and cut out the card. When you’re drawing parts to cut out, draw them in reverse. After you cut them out, flip them over. That way, they’ll be the right way around and won’t have pencil marks all over them. You need to use a sharp craft knife to cut out the hole, so be careful. Use the scissors to cut out the card.
2. Copy the templates from Figure 5-3 onto red, dark pink, and pink card; score along the dotted lines so that the folds are crisp and accurate.
3. Place the largest card inner behind the open card, draw a slightly smaller heart through the hole in the card, and then cut it out. The actual size you make the heart is a matter of personal preference — about 1/2" smaller should be okay. Line up the creases on the two cards as Figure 5-4 shows and
draw a smaller heart on the back card through the hole. Cut the hole out.
4. Repeat Step 3 with the middle-sized card inner Line up the largest and medium-sized card inners. Draw a smaller heart on the medium card inner through the hole and cut the heart out. The smallest card inner has no hole.
5. Make the tabs that will join the parts together. Copy the template from Figure 5-5 onto thin card. You need six tabs, two for each card inner. The color doesn’t matter because these parts won’t be seen. Score the dotted lines and cut out the parts.
6. Glue the three card inners into place and let the glue dry. Line the edge of the flap of the largest card inner with the crease in the center of the card and glue it into place. Glue the medium card inner behind the first, and glue the smallest card inner behind the medium one, as Figure 5-6 shows. Glue in the six tabs to complete the card. Leave the card open to dry thoroughly. After it’s dry, you can fold it flat. Write your message on the front and post it to your true love!
